falling in

I've recently made my baby girl a winter coat for church. Silly, eh, to make a coat specifically for Sunday.  We go to church twice on a Sunday and since we were kids, we always had a neat coat for church.  And I suppose I just can't shake the habit.  I have a 'neat' coat, and so does my husband.  Just fitting the baby had to have one too ;)

The pattern is from the 6/2012 issue of Ottobre.  I made a size 80 (the size K wears now) and it's a bit big.

I'm particularly impressed that I remembered to add satin in the sleeves so her clothes don't ride up to her armpits. It wasn't in the pattern, and that is the only change I made besides leaving off the ribbon at the waist.

I didn't have any velvet ribbon to put at the waist and now I regret finishing it off before ordering ribbon (aka waiting two weeks for velvet ribbon from the States).  Oh well, it's still so cute on her since K has such chubby cheeks and the coat is a little bubble.

I've also decided to participate in the Feathers QAL over at The ADD Crafter.  This quilt will be for our bed!  I had started one for our bed before, but my husband thought there was too much pink.  What!?  Not manly enough?!
Anyway, so this quilt will be jewel tone scrappy with black Andover Chambray for the background.  Now I just have to decide what range of colours to include.

The top row is all the bits minus orange, the second row has some orange pieces included, and the bottom is basically the top pared down.  I think either the top or middle one appeals most to me.  Then the quesiton is how to put them together!  Just pick totally random, or make some order out of it.  Put like colours together, or just mix them all up.  Planning always takes me forever.

Last, and if you've come this far, it's Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day {Week} hosted by Sew Mama Sew.  Last year I didn't participate, and this year I waffled, thus the late jumping in on the game.  I'm always wondering who comes by to enter giveaways - just people looking for freebies and they enter every giveaway they find, or people who really read blogs and enter only ones that they would find useful for themselves.
I think I fall in the second group.  I am a blog reader when I have time, but I'm not much of a commenter.  I'm the silent stalker.  I also don't enter every giveaway open, but enter only ones that would be useful to me or someone I know.

In any case, enough yapping, you want to know what I'm giving away!  I have two prizes, and I'm following Kristel's idea of giving one out randomly and one out to a specifically international/Canadian entrant.

Here are the two prizes:

1. A pack of 42 5"charms chosen from my stash - they may or may not include these.

2. a 6" charm pack of Essentials

To enter leave a comment telling me what kind of sewing machine you have.  I recently bought a Janome 2030QDC second hand.  The lady I bought it from only used it for the class and to make one shirt, so really, it was new.  Before that I had a Brother I had bought from Walmart - yeah, classy.  The only thing that machine lacked was throat space.
What do you sew on?

{Please also let me know if you are a US entrant or international/Canadian.}

Giveaway ends Dec. 13 8pm MST.
---CLOSED---
Winner will be announced as soon as Little D is in bed :)

Winners have been contacted and have responded, so now I'm announcing them.

  1. I have a Singer Confidence Quilter. I was sewing on my mom's Singer which was from the 1980's and it was great, but I wanted something with more features. I'm at the point where I probably should have a better machine, but I can't justify the cost of a Janome or Bernina since I've been able to do everything I want on my Singer without any problems. I think I'm lucky because I've heard that people have not had good luck with new Singers.

  4. I have a Janome XL601 and I love it, my parents bought it for me about 3 months ago after my 3 year old Brother CS8080 gave up and wasn't worth fixing (I had tried to get it fixed twice but when it came back "working" it still had all the same problems and even a new one!) - I hadn't really used it much either. I am much happier with the Janome, everything that I didn't like about the Brother is different on it and I have used it more allready.

  12. I have a crappy Kenmore, but maybe I shouldn't call it crappy because it just keeps on chugging no matter what. I often think about buying myself a new one, but... it just keeps working, so how can I justify adding more stuff to my life, when the stuff I've got is serviceable?

Anyway, as you know, I'm from Canada :D I enter giveaways like you too - only things that look like they'd really be useful to me. And I keep a link for all the blogs where I enter, and then go back and read them after all the madness is over.

  20. I have a Brother that I bought off Amazon for around $100 - certainly not my dream machine, but it sews a straight line and has a walking foot! someday I'd like a machine with more throat space and better tension so I can free motion quilt, but I'm pretty impressed with what my little guy can accomplish!

    I'm in Chicago, IL :)

  23. I am like you - I only enter giveaways that I think would be useful, and lately, I don't enter any at all (too much stuff, not enough time to get it all done!), but SMS sucked me in. :)

I have a Juki Exceed and I love it more than I can possibly express here. Seriously, if it were cuddly, it would be next to me like a child's favorite doll at bedtime. Alas, while she is exceedingly beautiful and does a wonderful job for me, it would definitely be an awkward experience if I took her to bed with me. Besides, my husband might get jealous.

  65. I enjoyed reading your thoughts about giveaways. To me, they're a great way to swap, but sometimes it seems a bit disingenuous. Quilter's are nuts for acquiring stash though, and of course here I am shamelessly hopping from giveaway to giveaway!!
I love your idea to share 42 pcs of your own stash. So much more personal:-)
I like all three fabric pulls you posted. Since they will be set off by black, my pick is pic2 since it is the brightest:-)
I use an old Bernina 1020 I purchased new in 90, and Mr Juki I purchased preowned this year. He stands by ready to FMQ ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I have a Pfaff Quilter's Expression 4.0. The lady and I had a few troubles with FMQ at the beginning, but she's a real workhorse, stable (heavy!) and stiches precisely at every speed.
    Thanks for the chance!

  67. I have a Juki 2010Q and I love it! But it isn't ideal for garments so I have my eye on a Juki serger as well.

On a separate note--I enter most of the giveaways (except for those that REQUIRE you be a follower-just because it irritates me). But every giveaway I enter I take the time to go look at the blog and see if it's something I'm interested in following. I will only follow a blog that I'm actually interested in reading. I will NEVER become a follower just for an extra entry. Plus I won't like you on Facebook or follow you on Twitter since I hate having my feed clogged with stuff I already see on blogs. Just thought I'd share my thought process about giveaways. Now I'm off to take a look around to see if I'd like to "silently stalk" you ;)

  70. Hey there! You know me. :) I have a Babylock Crafter's Choice. Pretty good machine but not really the space to quilt anything big. I'm fairly happy with it though. My only real complaint with it is that it won't form a stitch through more than one layer of leather. :)

    thanks for the giveaway!

  84. I have a Janome Green Hello Kitty machine. It's a 3/4 sized machine I got on clearance at Target for $25 and it is the best money I ever spent. It's no doubt meant for a child to learn on but it is a good machine! I have been shocked how much it will put up with. I have hemmed jeans on it and quilted quilts and it's rarely given me any guff. I am in the US. Sorry to post twice, the first time I forgot that you had asked us to say where we were at. So I deleted it but it still shows that there was a post there. 167. I have my mom's Bernina 1090. It's 18 years old and a total work horse!!! I love it! The only think it's lacking that I'm starting to want is the larger throat space and a stitch regulator (The 750qe is on my wish list when I win the lottery). But, the more I practice my FMQ, the better I get and the easier it is. Just think how much easier it would be with 5 more inches of space! PS. I'm glad I found your blog. I just bought the feathers pattern at the Houston festival and hope to join in on your QAL! mrscwatson81@hotmail.com
