I've recently made my baby girl a winter coat for church. Silly, eh, to make a coat specifically for Sunday. We go to church twice on a Sunday and since we were kids, we always had a neat coat for church. And I suppose I just can't shake the habit. I have a 'neat' coat, and so does my husband. Just fitting the baby had to have one too ;)
The pattern is from the 6/2012 issue of Ottobre. I made a size 80 (the size K wears now) and it's a bit big.
I'm particularly impressed that I remembered to add satin in the sleeves
so her clothes don't ride up to her armpits. It wasn't in the pattern,
and that is the only change I made besides leaving off the ribbon at
the waist.
I didn't have any velvet ribbon to put at the waist and now I regret finishing
it off before ordering ribbon (aka waiting two weeks for velvet ribbon
from the States). Oh well, it's still so cute on her since K has such chubby cheeks and the coat is a little bubble.
I've also decided to participate in the Feathers QAL over at The ADD Crafter. This quilt will be for our bed! I had started one for our bed before, but my husband thought there was too much pink. What!? Not manly enough?!
Anyway, so this quilt will be jewel tone scrappy with black Andover Chambray for the background. Now I just have to decide what range of colours to include.
The top row is all the bits minus orange, the second row has some orange pieces included, and the bottom is basically the top pared down. I think either the top or middle one appeals most to me. Then the quesiton is how to put them together! Just pick totally random, or make some order out of it. Put like colours together, or just mix them all up. Planning always takes me forever.
Last, and if you've come this far, it's Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day {Week} hosted by Sew Mama Sew. Last year I didn't participate, and this year I waffled, thus the late jumping in on the game. I'm always wondering who comes by to enter giveaways - just people looking for freebies and they enter every giveaway they find, or people who really read blogs and enter only ones that they would find useful for themselves.
I think I fall in the second group. I am a blog reader when I have time, but I'm not much of a commenter. I'm the silent stalker. I also don't enter every giveaway open, but enter only ones that would be useful to me or someone I know.
In any case, enough yapping, you want to know what I'm giving away! I have two prizes, and I'm following Kristel's idea of giving one out randomly and one out to a specifically international/Canadian entrant.
Here are the two prizes:
1. A pack of 42 5"charms chosen from my stash - they may or may not include these.
2. a 6" charm pack of Essentials
To enter leave a comment telling me what kind of sewing machine you have. I recently bought a Janome 2030QDC second hand. The lady I bought it from only used it for the class and to make one shirt, so really, it was new. Before that I had a Brother I had bought from Walmart - yeah, classy. The only thing that machine lacked was throat space.
What do you sew on?
{Please also let me know if you are a US entrant or international/Canadian.}
Giveaway ends Dec. 13 8pm MST.
---CLOSED---
Winner will be announced as soon as Little D is in bed :)
Winners have been contacted and have responded, so now I'm announcing them.

I have a Singer Confidence Quilter. I was sewing on my mom's Singer which was from the 1980's and it was great, but I wanted something with more features. I'm at the point where I probably should have a better machine, but I can't justify the cost of a Janome or Bernina since I've been able to do everything I want on my Singer without any problems. I think I'm lucky because I've heard that people have not had good luck with new Singers.
ReplyDeleteI have a Janome Sewist 500. It is my first sewing machine and so far I've been quite pleased! :)
ReplyDeleteI sew on an old Kenmore. I've had it since college and it still works great. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have a Janome XL601 and I love it, my parents bought it for me about 3 months ago after my 3 year old Brother CS8080 gave up and wasn't worth fixing (I had tried to get it fixed twice but when it came back "working" it still had all the same problems and even a new one!) - I hadn't really used it much either. I am much happier with the Janome, everything that I didn't like about the Brother is different on it and I have used it more allready.
ReplyDeleteI sew on the Bernina that my hubby bought me 10 years ago. I do love it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteA Singer 301! I bought it at a yard sale and love it dearly!
ReplyDeleteMarysville, WA
Currently I am sewing on a Singer from Walmart! I was gifted several vintage sewing machines and once I get them restored I will be happily sewing with them...2 are vintage singer, one a treadle, and one was made by a company that now makes Toyota trucks!
ReplyDeleteI have a singer from Joann's- I don't love it!

ReplyDeleteI have a Janome 1600 and a Bernina 135s. I am spoiled! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI have a Brother PC-420 PRW. Thanks for the giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteI have a crappy Kenmore, but maybe I shouldn't call it crappy because it just keeps on chugging no matter what. I often think about buying myself a new one, but... it just keeps working, so how can I justify adding more stuff to my life, when the stuff I've got is serviceable?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, as you know, I'm from Canada :D I enter giveaways like you too - only things that look like they'd really be useful to me. And I keep a link for all the blogs where I enter, and then go back and read them after all the madness is over.
I have several second hand machines, a brother ls2020, it has started to act funny (husband is looking into servicing this one) I have an old Janome that is a trooper and my husband is an expert at fixing the timing for me after much paper piecing and an old kenmore that I cannot figure out the tension on. one day I will get myself a new machine but there is always so much fabric to buy :)
ReplyDeleteI sew on a Bernina 170 it is 14 years old and keeps going.
ReplyDeleteI have a 28-year-old Kenmore. I'm thinking it's time to upgrade. :-) (I'm in the U.S.)
ReplyDeleteI have a Singer Stylist that I got a couple years ago for Christmas. My parents never thought I would become a quilter =)
ReplyDeleteI am quite attached to my Janome Jem 2. But at the sewing studio, I get to play with very nice Berninas! Thanks for the giveaway and greetings from Portland, Oregon, USA! artseedz (at) gmail (dot) com

ReplyDeleteI have a Janome 7700. I have sew much fun quilting with it.
ReplyDeletethanks for the giveaway from snowy NH
I have a Brother that I bought off Amazon for around $100 - certainly not my dream machine, but it sews a straight line and has a walking foot! someday I'd like a machine with more throat space and better tension so I can free motion quilt, but I'm pretty impressed with what my little guy can accomplish!
ReplyDeleteI'm in Chicago, IL :)
I have a Singer Stylist in a cabinet that is at least 40 years old! I hope it never dies.
ReplyDeleteI have emerald 116 viking. I love my machine I just need to upgrade one of these days.
ReplyDeletered_murray2(at)yahoo(dot)com
I have a Janome Magnolia.
ReplyDeleteA pfaff :o)
ReplyDeleteI am like you - I only enter giveaways that I think would be useful, and lately, I don't enter any at all (too much stuff, not enough time to get it all done!), but SMS sucked me in. :)
ReplyDeleteI have a Juki Exceed and I love it more than I can possibly express here. Seriously, if it were cuddly, it would be next to me like a child's favorite doll at bedtime. Alas, while she is exceedingly beautiful and does a wonderful job for me, it would definitely be an awkward experience if I took her to bed with me. Besides, my husband might get jealous.
I just bought a Pfaff Ambition 1.0 :) and I am in Ottawa :)
ReplyDeleteLove the church coat, Deanna! I've made a few of them too.
ReplyDeleteI live in Chilliwack, BC, as you know and I have a Janome 6609 and I love it!
I use a kenmore. It's actually pretty great. Plus I inherited it from my mother in law when she past away. She's responsible for hooking me up with my husband so I think of her fondly when I use my machine!
ReplyDeleteI have a Bernina 160--it was my grandmother's, so it's a bit old, but still pretty sturdy.
ReplyDeletea Viking

ReplyDeleteI sew with a Janome 10001 and love it.
ReplyDeleteI have a Husqvarna Platinum. It has a moderate throat space and a whole lot of fancy stitches. I have a couple of other vintage machines I would like to get set up and use some day. I am in Canada. (eh)
ReplyDeleteI'm from Vancouver, WA in the US. I sew on an older Viking, which has been a good workhorse for me for many years but I do hope to get a newer machine sometime. I love those charm squares!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your giveaway. I am like you. I fall into the second group and only enter giveaways that are useful to me. I also love reading blogs and seeing what everyone is doing. I am from the USA . I sew on a Bernina Activa 240.

ReplyDeleteI use my husbands Elna 1010. I am in the market for a Janome. :) Thanks for the chance to win!!
ReplyDeleteI have a Janome 3160QDC
ReplyDeleteI use a Brother. I am a fairly new quilter and can't see putting a lot of money into a machine until I see how my quilting goes. I am from the US. Thank you for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI have a Janome Memory Craft 6500. Love it! From the USA!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your thoughts about giveaways. To me, they're a great way to swap, but sometimes it seems a bit disingenuous. Quilter's are nuts for acquiring stash though, and of course here I am shamelessly hopping from giveaway to giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteI love your idea to share 42 pcs of your own stash. So much more personal:-)
I like all three fabric pulls you posted. Since they will be set off by black, my pick is pic2 since it is the brightest:-)
I use an old Bernina 1020 I purchased new in 90, and Mr Juki I purchased preowned this year. He stands by ready to FMQ ;-)
I have a Pfaff Quilter's Expression 4.0. The lady and I had a few troubles with FMQ at the beginning, but she's a real workhorse, stable (heavy!) and stiches precisely at every speed.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance!
I have a Juki 2010Q and I love it! But it isn't ideal for garments so I have my eye on a Juki serger as well.
ReplyDeleteOn a separate note--I enter most of the giveaways (except for those that REQUIRE you be a follower-just because it irritates me). But every giveaway I enter I take the time to go look at the blog and see if it's something I'm interested in following. I will only follow a blog that I'm actually interested in reading. I will NEVER become a follower just for an extra entry. Plus I won't like you on Facebook or follow you on Twitter since I hate having my feed clogged with stuff I already see on blogs. Just thought I'd share my thought process about giveaways. Now I'm off to take a look around to see if I'd like to "silently stalk" you ;)
My sewing machine is a Husqvarna Saphire 870 Quilt.
ReplyDeleteSanta brought me 2 new Juki machines last year - a 2010Q and a F600. I am so happy with them both and they are the perfect complement to each other in my mind! Thank you for a lovely giveaway.
ReplyDeleteHey there! You know me. :) I have a Babylock Crafter's Choice. Pretty good machine but not really the space to quilt anything big. I'm fairly happy with it though. My only real complaint with it is that it won't form a stitch through more than one layer of leather. :)
ReplyDeletethanks for the giveaway!
I have the walmart special....a brother and I concur on the throat space. I wrestle with that thing all the time. Thanks for the giveaway. It's nice to read everyone's responses. kmcassie@gmail.com

I have a plain old regular Singer sewing machine it does the job. Don't get me wrong, something a little cooler or high tech might be fun but mine works just fine. I am from the US.
ReplyDeleteI just got a Brother Pacesetter sewing/embroidery machine at an auction for just $40. I didn't know it at the time, but it's missing the embroidery arm, so it's just a sewing machine after all - but what a nice one it is! I love it. And $40 for a high-end machine? Yes, please!
ReplyDeleteI'm in Canada! by.grace@hotmail.ca
I have a Janome Memory Craft 9000. I don't think they make that model anymore. Mine is a hand-me-down from my MIL and I have used it probably at least 10 years. Best hand-me-down ever!

ReplyDeletei am from the usa. i dont own a sewing machine. i hand piece and hand quilt and donate all of them to charity. i am on a low income so i am tickled pink with any fabric i can get. thank you for sharing from your stash. babscorbitt@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteI have a Janome Green Hello Kitty machine. It's a 3/4 sized machine I got on clearance at Target for $25 and it is the best money I ever spent. It's no doubt meant for a child to learn on but it is a good machine! I have been shocked how much it will put up with. I have hemmed jeans on it and quilted quilts and it's rarely given me any guff. I am in the US. Sorry to post twice, the first time I forgot that you had asked us to say where we were at. So I deleted it but it still shows that there was a post there. I hope that doesn't mess things up.
ReplyDeleteBernina Artista 170 for sewing at home and a Janome Jem 720 for travel. Thanks for the chance!

ReplyDeleteI have a Janome that belonged to my mum but she gave it to me when my last machine broke! I'm International :)
ReplyDeleteAfter a ton of research and a smaller budget, I chose a new Juki f600. Meets my needs although I am currently wanting to purchase a vintage machine. No room, so that thought will have to be put on hold.
ReplyDeleteI am using a Janome 4800mc most of the time; I do have a brother (from walmart) and a kenmore from sears. BUT my new Janome 6600 is on the UPS truck on the way to my house as I type this. I am thrilled, mostly because of the 9inch throat space.
ReplyDeleteI have a new Janome 15000. I live in USA
ReplyDeleteHello - I have an old(ish) Toyota sewing machine. Yes, Toyota but nothing to do with a car! He is misbehaving at the moment so he MAY be replaced (I keep threatening him!!) I am an international follower :)

ReplyDeleteI have my mom's Bernina 1090. It's 18 years old and a total work horse!!! I love it! The only think it's lacking that I'm starting to want is the larger throat space and a stitch regulator (The 750qe is on my wish list when I win the lottery). But, the more I practice my FMQ, the better I get and the easier it is. Just think how much easier it would be with 5 more inches of space! PS. I'm glad I found your blog. I just bought the feathers pattern at the Houston festival and hope to join in on your QAL! mrscwatson81@hotmail.com

ReplyDeleteI sew and quilt using my Janome 7500 MC and my vintage Singer 15-91. Neither are new (obviously), but I'm able to do most anything sewing/quilting wise, while I save up for a new machine, so I feel pretty lucky.
Thanks for the lovely giveaway!
I have a cheap, horrible brother from walmart... I asked santa for a janome this year. I'm crossing my fingers. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have a ten year old Elna - I love it! Thanks for your fun giveaway! I love sewing with charms. I'm from the US
ReplyDeleteI sew on an old beloved Bernina 1630 and had to replace the electronic board. That's how much I love it.

ReplyDeleteHello from Minnesota. That little coat is a dream! I've had my sewing machine for two years; my mom found it sitting on the curb waiting for trash pick-up and gave it to me along with a one-day sewing lesson. (It's an unglamorous Euro-Pro 8260 with straight and zig-zag.) I've been stitching ever since.
ReplyDeletei have a Pfaff 7562 that I have had for a long time. I love it
ReplyDeleteI also have a sort of middle-of-the-road Janome, an upgrade from a walmart Brother machine. Makes a big difference doesn't it :)
ReplyDeleteI sew on a brother most of the time but I have a bernina serger that I love. I am in the US

ReplyDeleteMy machine is a basic Singer that my mom picked up from Costco and brought over in her carry-on luggage, so sweet of my lovely Mom.
I sew on a Husqvarna 190 Selectronic that I got (used) as a college graduation present...20+ years ago. I love it and will be so sad when it finally dies. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have an Elna which has been more reliable than the Singers I had before that, EXCEPT for my old featherweight which works like a charm!
